Esomeprazole reduces the stomach acid by inhibiting the activity of an enzyme (H+/K+ ATPase or gastric proton pump) and this is located in the stomach wall cells that are involved in the release of gastric acid secretion, causing tissue damage in the food pipe, stomach, and duodenum. Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It operates by lowering the level of acid in the stomach that assists in the relief of acid-related indigestion as well as heartburn.

• Esomeprazole can interact with a blood thinner like warfarin, an antifungal like ketoconazole, anti-HIV medication such as atazanavir & nelfinavir, iron supplements, ampicillin antibiotic, and anti-cancer medication like methotrexate.
• Inform your doctor if you are on these medications. Long-term use of Esomeprazole can induce lupus erythematosus (an inflammatory disease where the immune system assaults its own tissues), Vitamin B12, and magnesium deficiency.
• Consumption of Esomeprazole can suppress the signs of gastric cancer, so in case of any severe stomach cramp or gastric bleeding (blood in mucus or stool), see the doctor immediately.
